Located beside Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle is one of the city’s most impressive historic landmarks. Once the seat of the powerful Maeda clan, its distinctive white walls, massive stone ramparts and reconstructed gates provide a striking backdrop with a very different feel from Kanazawa’s gardens and traditional streets.

Having photographed here extensively, I know how to use the castle’s architecture, stone walls and open spaces to create both dramatic wide photographs and more intimate portraits. The scale of the grounds also means that choosing the right angles and locations is important—allowing the castle to become part of the composition without overwhelming the people in the photograph.
